HyLogger Demonstrations - hyperspectral scanning of core

GSA - NTGS Meeting: Friday 16th July; from 3.30pm at NTGS Core Facility, Farrell Crescent, Winnellie

Introducing the NTGS HyLogger - What it Does and How You Can Use it for Your Core

Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) has received HyLogger equipment as part of its participation in a collaborative research infrastructure project funded by the Federal Government's 'National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy' (NCRIS). Spectroscopic logging of drillcore delivers cost-effective information related to the physical and chemical characteristics of sub-surface geological environments.

Companies will have a chance to obtain hyperspectral and imaging data on drillcore for their NT projects. The HyLogger delivers an objective and consistent log of hydrous mineralogy within a hole (some of which is hard to determine with the naked eye). The outcomes can help geologists think about and question the processes that may have created the observed mineralogy and mineral assemblages.

Come along and have a look at the NTGS HyLogger in action at the NTGS Core Facility. Belinda Smith (HyLogger Geologist) will highlight some of the results from scanning of core from the NTGS collection, plus give some examples of applying the HyLogger data applicable to exploration. See the type of information you can get from your core and find out about getting your core scanned.

More information is available on the National Virtual Core Library<http://www.nt.gov.au/d/Minerals_Energy/Geoscience/index.cfm?header=National%20Virtual%20Core%20Library> page on our website or download the meeting flyer<http://www.nt.gov.au/d/Minerals_Energy/Geoscience/Content/File/Docs/NVCL/HyloggerDemoJul10.pdf>.
Alternatively you can contact Belinda Smith on 8999 5228 or Belinda.smith at nt.gov.au.

Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations

As part of Bringing Forward Discovery, the Territory Government has committed $2.4 million over three years to increase the intensity of exploration drilling and geophysics in greenfields areas of the Northern Territory. The program provides companies with 50% of expenses (up to $100,000) to assist with the costs of exploration in remote areas.

Details of the successful applicants from Rounds 1 and 2 and the current status of the core and/or data collected can be viewed at http://www.minerals.nt.gov.au/collaborations.

The successful applicants for the third and final round were announced on xx. Funding was awarded to 8 diamond drilling projects and 5 geophysical acquisition programmes out of a total of 34 applications. Negotiation and implementation of contracts is underway so exploration funded by the Collaborations program can commence in July 2010. Further details are available on the website.

West Arunta Gravity Survey 2010

The Northern Territory Geological Survey commenced a regional gravity survey over the western Arunta Region of central Australia on 6th June 2010. The survey will cover an area of 90,000 km2 and involves approximately 12,000 helicopter-supported ground gravity stations, at station spacings that vary between 4 km, 2 km and 1 km grids. Contributions from a number of exploration companies allowing infilling of large areas at higher station densities are being finalised. Release of the dataset is expected in the second half of 2010.

Preliminary images of the results produced during the survey acquisition are available on the Geophysical Image Web Server at:
http://apps.minerals.nt.gov.au/iws.

Upon completion of this survey the Bringing Forward Discovery initiative will have acquired new gravity data for over 380,000 km2.
